Why Volunteer with Hospice Dufferin
Hospice Dufferin offers a unique and compassionate environment. Volunteers come from all backgrounds, united by a desire to help others during their time of greatest need.
Hospice volunteering suits dedicated people who want to support palliative individuals and be present throughout their journey. For many, it is one of the most rewarding ways to help.
Roles
There are both direct and indirect service roles, so people can help in ways that match their comfort and skills.
- Palliative support volunteers provide emotional and practical support in homes, hospitals, and long-term care.
- Bereavement support volunteers connect with people in group and individual settings.
Training
Before beginning, volunteers complete Palliative Support Services Volunteer Training (about 30 hours). It can be taken in a group format twice a year or independently with a mentor.
Topics include hospice philosophy, boundaries, spiritual/emotional/physical needs at end of life, stress management, privacy, grief support, and communication with clients and families.
What Volunteers Often Gain
- A greater appreciation for life and what matters most
- Deeper understanding of life-limiting illness and caregiving
- Broader cultural and life perspectives
- A strong sense of purpose and community contribution
